Those who cannot remember the past…

The first education programming we get this year is a discussion about Jewish sexual ethics?

How might Judaism’s teachings on sex surprise, and even shock us from our contemporary point of view? What does it mean to move through the world with a “Jewish sexual ethic?” Does, or can, traditional Judaism intersect with sex-positive feminism? What exactly is “kosher sex”?

This reminds me of something…but I can’t seem to put my finger on it. Oh, right! Now I remember.

Hillel hosted “Kosher Sex: The Game Show” in Adams Lower Common Room (LCR) on Monday as part of the week’s Jewbilation festivities. Done in Jeopardy-fashion, the trivia game tapped into potentially touchy areas, including the category “I ‘Know’ You Biblical Relations.” … But the underwhelming attendance—a mere 13—seemed to indicate that it wasn’t a priority for many Hillel members.

Now, if I recally correctly, half the people in attendance at Kosher Sex had to be dragged there because the planners were worried that attendance would be pathetic. And it was pathetic. So why are we doing Kosher Sex again? Or, at the very least, why aren’t we doing something else too?

By the way, check out this awesome link to some random blog that picked up on the Crimson’s trashing of Kosher Sex last year.

Perhaps the problem with Kosher sex was that it wasn’t kosher ENOUGH. Maybe we should have got this guy, TLR’s John Diggs. From Fridays Cromson: “If a woman makes herself sexually available, a lot of people say “Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free?”. He also chides men for being stuck in their “barbarian childish ways”

I count one event so far this year. And it was a really small one with poor attendance.

You’re right. I was out of line there. I made a commitment, early on, to try and not hurt anybody’s feelings. I had no intentions of pissing off Yonit, really. When you get down to it she’s the one who stepped up and volunteered to do an admirable thing, to devote lots of her time to edcom. All of SC deserves credit for devoting much of their time towards Harvard Hillel. That having been said, just like I think that it’s absurd that we have a voter drive when everyone’s automatically registered, I also think that EdCom has been fairly inactive. I think that’s a fair criticism.
